I am an author, editor, and literary consultant based in the area of Vancouver, Canada. I work with an international clientele of emerging and mid-career book authors, many of whom are featured on my website: www.HelpingYouGetPublished.com/
I have a scholarly background, with degrees in English literature and fine arts and a PhD in cultural history and publishing studies. Listed in The Writers Directory (formerly Contemporary Authors), International Authors and Writers Who's Who, and Killam Scholars Who's Who, I have written and published books, anthology contributions, articles, and reviews. My books include Passion Lost (Thomas Allen Books of Merit), When Passion Reigned (HarperCollins/Basic), The Printed Image and the Transformation of Popular Culture (Oxford University Press) and, as author/editor, a two-volume history, British Literary Publishing Houses, in the Dictionary of Literary Biography series (vols. 106 and 112, with Jonathan Rose; Gale Group). I have been reviewed in the New York Review of Books, Publishers Weekly, A.L.A. Booklist, Library Journal, National Post, San Francisco Review, Times Literary Supplement, and special-interest journals and featured on CTV's Canada AM, CBC TV's Broadcast One Bookmark, BRAVO's Book TV, in the book and lifestyle sections of several newspapers, and on various American and Canadian radio shows.
Prior to starting my current editing and literary consulting business, I worked as assistant editor for a scholarly journal in London, England, and on contract for Canadian publishing houses. For several years on the editorial board of the writers' magazine WordWorks, I now serve on the board of the international journal Media History. I have also taught the business and history of the book trade in the Writing and Publishing and Master of Publishing programs at Vancouver's Simon Fraser University and, for many years, offered my own workshop series, covering such topics as memoir writing, novels that sell, and how to break into the mainstream book trade.
On Work-in-Progress
My main concern is doing whatever I can to assist my client authors at HelpingYouGetPublished.com. In addition, I am working on an ebook series about writing and getting published--in particular, about what you often don't learn in writing groups and classes.
